Our first ESO tour of the year takes us to the Streator Public Library, a Carnegie library opened in 1903 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. But what makes this visit truly special is the recent restoration of its 1905 murals and architectural dome, completed in 2023 through a Save America’s Treasures grant.
Highlights include:
Four oil-on-canvas murals by Chicago artist Gustav Fuchs, newly restored to their original brilliance after decades of smoke damage
A beautifully restored domed ceiling with backlit glass that re-creates the library’s original skylight
Original plasterwork, wood floors, and architectural detailing brought back to life
After the library tour, we’ll enjoy lunch at Good Morning Good Day Café, a cozy downtown Streator spot known for its homemade Slovenian and Croatian dishes. Meals are self-pay. Carpooling is available.
