May Luncheon and Lecture: History and Misconceptions Surrounding Botulism

In May we will feature a presentation by Dr. Jane Talkington, the nation’s only botulism historian after the luncheon. She will discuss the history and misconceptions surrounding botulism, drawing from her new book, Recognizing Botulism: New Insights from Old Narratives, which explores how the illness is more common than widely believed.

June Carl SANDburg Luncheon: Poetry, Music & Summer Reads

Carl SANDburg Luncheon: Poetry, Music & Summer Reads

Date: June 19, 2025
Lunch & Book Nook Booth: 11:30 AM – 1:00 PM
Carl Sandburg: Poet of the People with Barry Cloyd: 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM

For nearly two decades (1928–1945), Carl Sandburg made his home along the Michigan Dunes, where he wrote some of his most important works. Surrounded by sweeping sands and the ever-changing shores of Lake Michigan, he found solitude and inspiration in the rhythms of nature.

To honor Carl Sandburg’s 1931 performance at the Peoria Women’s Club, we invite you to a luncheon inspired by the beach before an afternoon of poetry, music, and storytelling.
