Why did we choose this film?

"Origin" is Ava DuVernay’s powerful adaptation of Isabel Wilkerson’s Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents - the Peoria Chautauqua Literary & Scientific Circle’s 2025 April book selection. The film follows Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Isabel Wilkerson (Aunjanue Ellis) as she navigates personal grief and embarks on a global journey to uncover the roots of systemic oppression. Connecting America’s history of slavery, the Holocaust in Germany, and India’s caste system, Isabel develops a groundbreaking thesis on how caste structures, beyond race alone, perpetuate inequality across societies.

Critics praised Origin for its bold storytelling, emotional depth, and intellectual rigor. The film’s ability to tackle complex, global issues with compassion and clarity has made it one of DuVernay’s most acclaimed works.

All PWC and OLLI Members, as well as their guests, are welcome to attend.

RSVP is Required by April, 23, 2025.
